Distressed, Patriotic, Chevron Nail Art Featuring You Polish Nail Decals

You Polish decals were provided to me for review.  All polishes purchased by me.

Hey folks!  Hope you're all having a good holiday weekend!  I whipped up some last-minute, easy nail art for the occasion :-).  It may be too late to try this design for Memorial Day if you don't already have chevron nail vinyls, but you have plenty of time to pick some up and try the design  on Independence Day!

You Polish nail decals

I recently received a variety of You Polish nail decals to try out, and I couldn't wait to try out the chevron sheet!  My sheet featured 40 thick chevron strips and 63 thin chevron strips, all in a silver color.  The strips were easy to use and sticky enough to withstand repositioning.  Unless your nails are extremely wide, you should be able to cut the thicker strips in half and get 2 stripes out of each strip.  The thinner strips are not as wide, so unless you have small nails, you likely won't get more than one stripe out of each strip.  I used 7 thick strips per hand, so the 40 thick strips should provide enough stripes for 2 full manis and many accent nails.  I used these like striping tape, painting over them and then removing them to reveal the design, but you can also just cut them to fit your nail and put top coat over them (they come in lots of colors, so you have plenty of options if you wish to use them this way). When used like striping tape, they provide a crisp, clean design.  A few of my stripes aren't very crisp, but that was my fault.  I think I wasn't careful enough in making sure the strips were securely laid down on the tricky bottom row.  As long as you take care when laying your strips down, you should be left with beautiful results!

Yes, I'm using a pretzel as a prop, haha.  My hand was acting up and I couldn't hold my compact mirror nicely, but I was able to hold the pretzel.  I totally ate it afterward.

You Polish chevron nail decals cost $5.50 for 100 strips.  You can get thick strips, thin strips, or a combination of both.  There are 30 colors to choose from, and the strips are made from a high quality vinyl.  You can purchase them from the You Polish website.  To stay up-to-date on the latest releases from You Polish, Like the brand on Facebook.

  1. Apply a white polish (I used Cult Nails Tempest), followed by a fast-dry top coat (I used Seche Vite).  Allow to dry for about 2 hours.
  2. Paint Elmer's Glue on the skin surrounding each nails.  Let dry.
  3. Apply You Polish chevron nail decals (I used the thicker ones) to your nails as neatly as possible.  I was able to get 2 stripes from each chevron strip, and used 7 strips per hand.
  4. Line 2 little bowls with doubled aluminum foil.  Pour a little blue polish (I used OPI I Saw...U Saw...We Saw...Warsaw) into one bowl and a little red polish (I used Butter London Pillar Box Red) into the other.  Add a couple drops of polish thinner to each and stir with a toothpick or orangewood stick.
  5. Lightly dip a a sponge (I used a sponge from a China Glaze nail art kit, but cosmetic sponges should also work) into the blue polish and blot it a few times on a sheet of paper.  Then dab it on the top half of your nail, applying the color more heavily near the cuticle and lighter towards the middle.  Repeat for all nails.

  6. Repeat the sponging process with a clean sponge and the red polish on the lower half of each nail, applying the color more heavily near the free edge and lighter in the middle.
  7. Carefully pull off chevron decals and peel off the Elmer's glue.
  8. Using a small brush (I used the elf concealer brush) and pure acetone, clean up any stray polish around your cuticles.
  9. Wait a bit and apply a fast-drying top coat.  Try to "float" the top coat across your nail and avoid having the brush make contact with the nail.  This will help keep your design from streaking.  Even if it does streak (like mine did when my hand shook a bit and caused the brush to drag), people likely won't notice and the design will still look nice from afar.
